UK airline easyJet operated its first service from Keflavík International Airport (KEF) to London’s Stansted airport (STN) yesterday.

This is the first scheduled service from Iceland to London Stansted and easyJet’s seventh UK route. Passengers from Iceland can now choose the British low-cost airline to fly to seven destinations in the UK – Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester, London Luton, London Gatwick and now, London Stansted.

The Stansted route is to be a year-round twice-weekly service.

To celebrate the occasion, passenger boarding the inaugural flight were greeted with a very apt ice sculpture of the Airbus A320 jet they were travelling in.

“It is a great honour for me to be flying this maiden flight and very exciting to be part of easyJet’s rapid growth in Iceland,” said Davíð Ásgeirsson, the Icelandic captain flying the jet to London.

In 2014, the UK airline flew some 350,000 passengers to and from Iceland – more than the total population of the country itself.
