Scientists from the Iceland Met Office have been on Skaftárjökull glacier investigation the glacial river flood which began this morning.

The flood itself is not expected to emerge from under the glacier until tomorrow evening, or possibly on Thursday, but more specific findings should be available from IMO later today.

Scientists are confident that the flood will be similar to previous ones and that it will not be so fast as to catch anybody unawares.

“We’ll know more when the flood reaches the first water-level measurer,” explains IMO’s Snorri Zóphóníasson. “There is no doubt that this is a glacial river flood. The GPS station on the glacier has subsided and this happens when water empties out from the cauldron.”
