It's not just Iceland that's seeing a great surge in tourism this summer. According to website Allt um flug, a record number of passengers flew to and from Vágar airport in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of islands under Danish rule located halfway between Iceland and Norway.

Passengers amounted to 40.798 which a record in the 52 year-long history of the airport and an increase by 10,3 percent from last year.

According to the website, airport renovations in 2011 and enlargement of the air strip at Vágar airport plays a large part in this increase.

According to Jákup Sverrir Kass, managing director of the airport, Atlantic Airways have greatly extended their routes and that the Faroese tourist board has been doing a great job.

Passengers to the Faroes from Reykjavík have increased by 10 percent since July 2014. Air Iceland flies regularly from Reykjavik to Vágar Airport.
