The Icelandic Food Administration has closed down all mussel harvesting operations in Hvalfjörður, West Iceland as the poison named DSP is far higher than threshold limit values allow for.
The poison is made in small amounts by algae. The amount of poison is 440µg/kg of DSP and the threshold limit value is 160µg/kg.
The Food Adminstration warned people of collecting mussels in Hvalfjörður about one week ago and has now closed down all mussel harvesting operations.
"We warn people strongly against eating any mussels from the fjord. We will be monitoring the situation and make an announcement when eating mussels is safe again. "
