When the free range sheep of Iceland are herded up in september, this also heralds the beginning of the lamb slaughter season. One of the city's coolest venues, Kex Hostel, is hosting a weekend of festivities and food to celebrate the famously delicious Icelandic lamb.

"Here in Iceland we often look far for ingredients but we actually have such prime ingredients here. We wanted to show people all the different ways to serve lamb and decided to create a whole festival around it," says event manager Böðvar Guðjónsson.

Best of all, Kex Hostel will be offering all kinds of taster dishes for free both on Saturday and Sunday made from lamb meat and offal. The festival is organised in cooperation with local farmers and amongst the dishes on offer are lamb pancreas and chips, a British style kidney and heart Cornish pasty, a fried version of the traditional Icelandic rúllupylsa (offal sausage) and slátur (blood pudding and liver sausage) in a hot dog bun served with turnip mash.

For less adventurous types, try the lamb taco or a lamb version of the famous Kex Freedom Burger.
On Sunday, kids and adults alike can also observe how the traditional Icelandic slátur- blood pudding, liver sausage are made.
The lamb festival runs between 1 and 5 pm both Saturday and Sunday and of course you can get a great selection of beer on tap or a glass of red wine to wash down your meat with.

For an in-depth look at some of the foods made during this season in Iceland take a look at our story below:
High chieftain of Ásatrú religion on piss fermented shark and ram's testicles
