One of Reykjavik's oldest coffee houses evicted

Coffee shop and wine bar Tíu dropar will be closing in July after being one of the city's staples for over 40 years. Owners and staff of the coffee shop have issued a statement that a new company bought the building and terminated their lease on short notice.
"We did everything in our power to negotiate with the new owner so that we could keep renting the premises to no avail. We therefore have no other choice than to close the business with both financial loss and great emotional shock for the owners and staff of Tíu dropar."
Tíu dropar is a cosy, old fashioned café in the basement of a building in Laugavegur 27 and has enjoyed constant popularity. Its owners do not exclude the idea of possibly opening elsewhere in the city centre.
