The Imagine Peace Tower, a work of art by Yoko Ono,  will be illuminated at 8pm on Friday October 9th, the 75th anniversary of the birth of John Lennon. Iceland Monitor met with Ono and discussed the meaning of the peace tower in today's world.

The ‘tower of light’ is located on the island of Viðey, off the coast of Reykjavik. It is lit each year from Lennon’s birthday, 9 October, to the date of his death, 8 December. The words Imagine Peace are engraved on the artwork in 24 different languages.

John Lennon‘s widow, Yoko Ono is now attending the lighting ceremony for the ninth time in Reykjavik. This time round, she‘s accompanied by her daughter Kyoko Ono who is exhibiting her own artwork on Viðey island. Ono says that she‘s a little nervous before each lighting ceremony but that all of them are uniquely beautiful.

Ono believes that there‘s great wisdom and power in the northern hemisphere and that Iceland‘s clean air and nature help to deliver the message of peace to the rest of the world.

Asked whether she believes that the peace tower is particularly relevant this year with wars raging in various parts of the world and Europe‘s biggest migrant crisis since the second world war she says that it‘s important to focus on positivity.

The general public will be able to take free ferry rides to the island starting from 5:30pm and there will be free bus services from Reykjavik’s central Hlemmur bus station to the port.
