A new butcher shop, Matarbúrið,  opened at Grandagarður by the city's harbour last Friday. The shop is run by Þórarinn Jónsson and Lisa Boije from the farm Háls in Kjós, near Reykjavik and offers a selection of premium Icelandic beef as well as a selecition of fine condiments.

Matarbúrið joins delicatessen shop Búrið and ice cream parlour Valdís at the increasingly popular Grandi location, also a spot for numerous trendy restaurants and design boutiques.

"It looks like this is turning into Reykjavik's gourmet street," explains Jónsson who adds that they plan to add lamb and chicken to their range of products. "Let's see what people think, for the time being our plan is to specialise in beef." He says that Icelanders are increasingly interested in buying meat straight from the farm and are looking for quality, organic produce.

At the Háls farm, Lisa Boije has been conjuring up all kinds of fine condiments using Icelandic herbs, such as chutney, mustard and jam, also on sale at Matarbúrið, which is open daily until 6 pm except Sundays and Mondays.
