Travel back to the 13th century?

Just outside of Akureyri there is a place called Gásir. You may not have heard of it, but it is significant in Icelandic history. Gásir was the main trading post in northern Iceland during the Middle Ages, and the place is mentioned many times in Old Icelandic Sagas from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Once a year, Gásir turns back to the 13th century. A whole village comes to life, buzzling with activities. Blacksmiths, weavers, boat makers, brimstone-cleaners, merchants and chanters all turn up at the village, surrounded by the remains of the old trading post.

This time travel is called the Medieval Days and will take place on the 17 – 19 June. The festival is open to all, and is a great way to take a peek at the past and get to know old Icelandic village life.
