Universal pictures' Everest directed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur has been selected as the opening film of the Venice Film Festival. This is the first time that a film directed by an Icelander opens such an important film festival.

According to the website of the Venice Film Festival, the film is inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest and documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind.

Everest, a Working Title Production, stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Emily Watson,  Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes and was shot on location in Nepal and the Italian Alps.
