The Pink Street Boys were founded in early 2013 and play noisy guitar rock, inspired by the sixties and seventies. Their first album, Trash from the Boys was released on cassette by Ladyboy Records and received the Kraumur award in 2014 and is nominated for the Nordic Music Prize 2015. In March 2014 the band recorded their first studio album, titled Hits#1 which was mixed and mastered by Curver Thoroddsen and released by 12Tónar. The boys are celebrating the release of the vinyl at Kaffistofan on Friday night accompanied by bands Singapore Sling,  Russian.girls, Godchilla and Seint. Iceland Monitor had a little chat to lead singer and guitarist Axel Björnsson who describes the event as being like Iceland Airwaves in just one single show.

Why are you hosting your release gig at Kaffistofan?

"We wanted the release show to be special. We have been playing all the bars in Reykjavík so often and its getting tired so Kaffistofan, a student-run gallery, is a fresh spot. We have played there a couple times before and it has always been fun. We're renting a big sound system from Exton so this we be a proper rock'n'roll show."

The event says bring your own booze, is this a recipe for disaster?

"I hope nobody gets hurt. Some people like to drink when they go to a concert and we just wanted to assure that everyone would  have a great time. We will also offer some "bolla"- a giant container of booze for those who get very thirsty."

Why should people attend this gig and what should they expect?

"First of all this is the cream of good rock n roll music which is coming out of Iceland right now. Here you've got all types of genres : industrial/shogaze/sludge/garage rock/ neo- psychedelia/drone. Something for everyone. This is like the real Iceland Airwaves  in just one single show!"

Can you give readers a local recommendation?

"I recommend that people to go to bars like Húrra, Paloma, Boston and Dillon. You'll find nice people there. Go to Slippurinn, the old harbour,  and check out the ships And if you're hungry go to Mandí (a kebab shop) or Hlölli ( a uniquely Icelandic greasy sandwich)."

Why is your drummer always half naked?

"Because he thinks he's a Greek god. And he sweats a lot. "

Is there a Pink Street Boys tour on the horizon for international audiences?

"No, nothing is decided. But we'd love to play in other countries especially the USA and Canada. We hope we can arrange it in the not so distant future."

Where can people buy your album?

"People can buy our album at 12Tónar, a record store and the label who released our album, and at Lucky Records and Smekkleysa record stores in Reykjavik. And we will have some for sale at the show."

The event takes place Friday, May 21st at Kaffistofan, Hverfisgata 42, 101 Reykjavik and starts at 9 p.m. Admission is 1000 ISK,  BYOB.
