Lithuania: “Thank you, Iceland!”

After the people of Lithuania declared independence from the then Soviet Union on 11 March 1990, Iceland was the first country in the world officially to recognise Lithuania’s independence, eleven months later in February 1991.

Lithuania has launched an initiative called ‘Embrace the Earth’ (link in Lithuanian), which involves forming heart shapes to thank the nations of the world for recognising Lithuanian independence.

Iceland has received its own special greeting from the pupils, teachers and parents of a Lithuanian school. Sitting in a heart-shaped circle and waving Icelandic flags, the group sends out a grateful “Thank you, Iceland!” in both Lithuanian and Icelandic (“Takk fyrir, Iceland!”)
