President’s last opening of Parliament?
President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson has revealed in his speech opening the Icelandic Parliament (‘Alþingi’) today that this will be the last time that he will have the honour of doing so.
Grímsson has been President since 1996 and this is the clearest indication yet that he may not be running for re-election in Iceland’s presidential elections next year.
The President used the opportunity of his speech today to express his profound respect for and genuine gratitude for Alþingi.
