Coldest June this century

June 2015 was the coldest June so far this century, according to information from the Icelandic Met Office.

While June temperatures in the capital Reykjavik in 2001 were lower than this year’s, one has to go right back to 1993 to find a colder June in the Westman Islands off the coast of South Iceland.

The Icelandic highlands and inland areas of Eastern Iceland saw the coldest conditions, while Western Iceland was – relatively – warm.

In many parts of the country, driving conditions remained difficult and vegetation made a late appearance. Despite the cold temperatures, poor weather conditions as such were infrequent in June.

Temperature-wise, the south-west of the country has seen the worst of the cold in the first six months of 2015. Reykjavik was 0.3°C colder than the 1961-90 average and the Westman Islands, 0.6°C colder.

Most other parts of the country were warmer in the period January-June than the 1961-90 average.
