Iceland’s Foreign Ministry has so far received no indication that Icelandic nationals have been injured in the earthquake which struck Italy last night – killing at least 38.

“We have received no information on Icelandic nationals, but our Consular Affairs Unit remains open 24 hours day,” says the Ministry’s Head of Information Andri Lúthersson. “We urge people to contact us if they are worried or have not heard from relatives.”

According to Lúthersson, there are no Icelanders known to be living in the worst affected area, although some live in the capital Rome, where the quake could be clearly felt.

The town of Amatrice – where many were killed – is a popular tourist destination and many visitors were there when the earthquake struck.
