Police were called in to Iceland’s stunning Jökulsárlón lagoon yesterday – when a group of ‘daring’ tourists walked out onto unstable ice.

Witnesses saw 15-20 people venture out onto the ice, which was moving considerably due to strong currents – despite signs warning visitors not to do so. Four were still on the fragile ice when the police arrived.

“The ice was very unstable and there were open holes – it would have made rescuing people very difficult if they had fallen in,” say police.

All the people involved returned to dry land safe and sound, but were spoken to by police.

Police remind everybody to observe warning signs and to challenge anybody they see attempting to walk out onto the ice.
