A high-speed rail link between Reykjavik and Keflavík Airport is now considered to be more feasible than initially assumed. Under one possible set-up, passengers could complete the 47km journey in 15-17 minutes.

Underground tunnel

According to an initial plan, trains would depart from Reykjavik Bus Station (BSÍ) straight into an underground tunnel taking it through the Greater Reykjavik area, stopping once. Once clear of Hafnarfjörður, trains would travel above ground all the way to Keflavík Airport. The average speed for the journey would be around 175 km/h.

Promising project

Overseas experts have been called in to analyse the latest business plan for the project, which now appears to be more promising than initially thought. Particularly significant as regards this assessment are the improved prospects for the tourism sector in Iceland. Efforts to gather the necessary share capital are also proceeding well.

If all goes well, a corporation tasked with costing the project and carrying out initial research could be in existence by the early summer and the project could be fully up and running within a year.
