This weekend saw the first semi-final of Söngvakeppnin 2016 – the preselection event to choose Iceland’s entry for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.

Six songs competed for three places in the grand final, to be held in Reykjavik on Saturday 20 February. The lucky qualifiers were:

  • Raddirnar – Greta Salome Stefánsdóttir
  • Óstöðvandi – Karlotta Sigurðardóttir
  • Hugur minn er – Erna Hrönn Ólafsdóttir & Hjörtur Traustason

You can see the live performances of these songs from Saturday night’s show on the website of Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV here (link in Icelandic).

These three songs will be joined by a further three qualifiers from a second heat this Saturday (plus one wild-card entry selected by a jury) in the star-studded final on 20 February.

While the six competing songs were obviously the focus of Saturday’s show, the high-point for many viewers was an interval act song performed by beloved Icelandic pop legend Páll Óskar (himself a former Icelandic Eurovision entrant).

Páll Óskar performed a special new song as votes were cast and counted celebrating Iceland’s 30th anniversary year in Eurovision. You can see the typically flamboyant performance here:
